Out of Town Patients

Out of Town Patients Coming from Out of Town? Not a Problem.

Decisions about your shoulder are important and many people consider having their surgery done by dedicated shoulder specialist. Dr. Denard routinely cares for people who come from outside of his local area to have their shoulder surgery. In most cases, the need for surgery can be determined by reviewing medical records, reviewing radiographs/MRI, and discussing symptoms over the phone. If surgery is a consideration and you wish to travel to have Dr. Denard perform the surgery, this can be arranged. After a phone review, an in-person visit is set-up the day before surgery to review details and confirm the need for surgery. After the surgery, follow-up visits can be performed remotely through phone calls and video conferencing. Many patients actually find the process more convenient than surgery near their home because the burden of in-office follow-up visits is removed.

Shoulder arthroscopy (rotator cuff repair or instability) is an outpatient or same day surgery. With same day shoulder surgery, the patient is allowed to go home in the first 24 hours after the surgery. This allows patients to recover at home as opposed to an overnight stay in a hospital. Additionally, many shoulder replacements, particularly for patients under the age of 70, can be done without a hospital stay. For patients traveling from out of town, early surgery times can be arranged so there is time to travel home if desired. When a patient goes home the day of surgery, Dr. Denard calls the patient that evening to check on them. In addition, an on-call physician is available 24 hours a day. Physical therapy begins at home the day after surgery with home exercises specific for each patient and outlined in an individualized rehabilitation plan.
